Check Engine Light On/ Flashing
Why is my check engine light coming on?
A check engine light notifies the driver that something isn’t functioning the way it should. Known technically as the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), this warning light in your instrument cluster is in the shape of a car engine. The light can be orange, red, or yellow, depending on your vehicle. Some models display “check engine” with the engine outline.
SOLID VS FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
Check engine light solid: When the check engine light turns on and stays on, the issue is typically related to emissions systems or some safety-related faults.
Check engine light flashing: A blinking or flashing check engine light indicates an issue severe enough to damage critical systems like the catalytic converter or internal engine, fuel, electrical, or air induction systems
COMMON MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE:
Don’t confuse the check engine light with your cars maintenance required or service required light. This service notification, shaped like a wrench OR spelled out, alerts you that an oil change or other scheduled maintenance is due.
What to do if check engine light appears?
Even if your vehicle seems to be running fine, you should always get the issue diagnosed as soon as possible. Depending on what is causing the Check Engine light to turn on, you may be able to continue driving your vehicle for a short amount of time without causing any further issues or damage. If your vehicle is not running properly, you should drive it as little as possible until you can get it to a repair shop. In some instances your vehicle should be towed to the repair shop. Always consult your situation with your repair shop First!
